Meet with us six times a year for a Poetry Jam!, a community gathering (near the not-quite full moon) where writers of poetry join together for a semi-improvisational READ-WRITE-READ- NIGHT. The activity will look like this: Poets will bring one of their own poems. Each participating poet will READtheir poem aloud while others listen. Inspired by the readings, we will then take a timed break to WRITE a brand new poem. Afterwards, we will come together again to READ our newly formed poems to one another. Come with one poem; go home with two!
Our inspiration for the Poetry Jam! is derived from the Jazz term "jam session", meaning "short, improvised passage performed by the whole band", as well as from the noun "jam" in the sense of "something sweet, something excellent." Jam sessions are often used to develop new material, find suitable arrangements, or simply as a social gathering and communal practice session. Just as musicians gather to play music freely without extensive preparation, we poets will gather to do the same with writing poetry.
Participating poets may bring non-participating friends for an entertaining and enriching evening. All are welcome!
Facilitation will be cheerfully administered by your capable guides— Susan Glassmeyer& Valerie Chronis Bickett.
Like a poetry slam, our Poetry Jam welcomes a wide range of poets. You'll hear a diversity of work incorporating all forms, styles, tone, and subject matter. Bring your heartfelt love poetry, your strict forms, your searing social commentary, uproarious comedy, or bitter- sweet personal confessional pieces.
Anything goes!
Take a risk!
Have fun!
Learn something!
